The Center for International Health Research at Brown University Malaria Research Program develops and applies high-throughput bacteriophage-based tools and technologies for malaria research to identify new vaccine targets in Plasmodium falciparum. One particular area of focus is identifications and characterizations of antibodies detected in only disease-resistant children. There is now an opening for an early stage post-doctoral associate position working in the Dr. Raj’s lab to identify and characterize vaccine targets during Plasmodium erythrocyte stages of the parasite. Studies will be focused on vaccine development against P. falciparum malaria using experiments involving in vitro assays and in vivo parasite challenge experiments using murine models. We are applying genomics, proteomics, high-resolution molecular imaging, and animal models to evaluate potential vaccine targets. There are opportunities for collaboration within the Department of Pathology and throughout Brown University's productive academic environment, including the Lifespan Institutes and numerous hospitals. A strong emphasis is placed on career development, participation in national meetings, communication skills, grant and manuscript writing, interdisciplinary research, and implications of the basic research for vaccine development against pediatric malaria.
A Ph.D., or MD/Ph.D. degree in molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, or Microbiology.
Outstanding communication skills to ensure good interactions across multiple research teams.
Experience with murine models and immunization by subcutaneous, intravenous & intraperitoneal routes. Experience with mouse organ harvest, isolation of blood & serum, dissection & isolation of splenocytes is a plus.
Evidence of publication record in infectious diseases
Experience in performing lab-based experiments using unicellular parasites
Experience working with in vitro and in vivo culture of Plasmodia parasites
