“Rehabilitating the Northern Forest for Economic and Climate Change Resilience”
This individual will facilitate research activities in the Ecological Forestry Lab managed by PI Dr. John Gunn.

Task 1: Use existing data to analyze forest management pathways for degraded and disturbed stands to understand how foresters and landowners might rehabilitate their forests to conditions that meet a range of objectives.

Task 2: Establish experimental field-based silvicultural treatments.

Task 3: Operational oversight of undergraduate hourly technicians.

Task 4: Perform statistical analysis on plot-level, geospatial, and regional forest inventory data sets in support of project objectives. Perform forest growth and yield modelling. Manage and document large data sets.

Task 5: Preparation of written publications suitable for publishing in peer-reviewed journals, development of outreach materials, and making oral presentations.


Additional Job Information

The postdoctoral scientist must work full time on the NHAES project to comply with federal time and effort reporting regulations.

Personal computer
Handheld Global Positioning System
Handheld Laser Rangefinder
Vegetation measurement instruments including diameter tape, clinometer, and basal area prism

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

Doctoral degree in Forest Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resources, or other closely related field.

High level of proficiency with basic computer software such as Microsoft Office, as well as geographic information systems (ArcGIS), statistical analysis (R, SAS), and forest growth and yield models such as the USFS Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS).

Ability to work safely and effectively in forested conditions in rugged terrain, and to navigate using global positioning systems.
Ability to work effectively and manage time across multiple projects. A demonstrated track record of written publication, including peer-reviewed and/or extension publications

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Applied forest management experience
Adept with Tableau data visualization software
Adept with scripting and statistics.
